India Bars Kashmiri Photojournalist from Traveling Abroad
On 2nd July, Sanna Irshad Mattoo, a Kashmiri photojournalist who recently won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize award, said that authorities at the Delhi airport denied her permission to travel abroad for a scheduled photography exhibition in Paris. Mattoo was scheduled to travel from Delhi to Paris today for a book launch and photography exhibition as one of 10 award winners of the Serendipity Arles grant 2020. Despite procuring a French visa, she was stopped at the immigration desk at Delhi airport. According to Mattoo, she was not given any reason but told that she would not be able to travel internationally. This instance of repression of freedom of press and the denial of the right to travel ought to be connected to the broader decline of freedom of press in India, and not as a singular or isolated event.
