Kashmiri teenager to appear in examinations while being incarcerated

On the 18th October, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court directed the Superintendent of Jammu Jail to allow a 19-year-old political prisoner from north Kashmir to appear in the BSc 3rd Semester examination taking place this month. Wasim Ahmed Malik, a resident of an area known as Bandipora, was arrested by police on charges of allegedly supporting the armed movement for Kashmir’s right to self-determination. He was a regular student at his college Bandipora before he was detained under the lawless Public Safety Act in September 2022. The Act allows the Indian state to jail Kashmiris arbitrarily and keep them behind bars for up to two years without a trial.[10]
