India reneged on its promise of the plebiscite. The Indian Constitution came into being and Article 1 declared the entire state of J&K as a part of the territory of India. Article 370 gave a “special” status to the State of J&K. Pro-Pakistan and pro-freedom Kashmiri leaders were detained, and many were pushed into exile.
